Perth Maltese Priest -
The Indonesian Connection                   by Paul Calleja

It might surprise readers to know that Perth has the most cosmopolitan
population in Australia. All Asian nations are represented by varying degrees
with the greatest numbers coming from Indonesia. The Indonesians do not quite
fit into the category of homeless refugees. Most are young, very affluent
students.
Father Michael Gatt, parish priest of the Perth suburb of Osborne Park, has had much contact with Indonesian students from Curtin University and from Indonesia and South East Asian colleges. His pastoral work with overseas students involves largely giving religious instruction and administering the sacraments. This has resulted in many strong friendships being formed with many local and overseas Asians. A number of his Indonesian friends have chosen to express their gratitude to Fr Gatt by inviting him to Indonesia as their guest. He made trips to Indonesia in 1997, 1999 and again in January 2001. On this latest occasion, he was asked to concelebrate with seven other Indonesian priests at the wedding of two doctors, graduates of Curtin University. The ceremony was held in an 800 capacity church and there were some two and a half thousand at the reception. |

Help-line 2000
Fr Gatt was again at the Helpline last Christmas for the eighth consecutive year to help the lonely and the depressed. He gives up his festive period to listen to anyone who wants to talk confidentially on a wide range of issues including drugs, domestic violence, family break-ups or suicide Fr Gatt takes about 50 calls each year, usually in equal numbers from men and women. It usually takes me up to March to clear up all those who call" he said. This year he took over 80 calls. Fr Gatt's Help-Line service was given exposure in the West Australian Newspaper, The Record and the Stirling Times. He also received a message from Perth's Catholic Archbishop Barry Hickey, thanking him for the Help-Line service. Fr Gatt is a member of the Maltese Professional and Business Association, which also commends him for his work over Christmas. The Maltese Herald 10/04/2001 | |
