Fr Michael Gatt congratulated by his Commanding Officer,
Wing Commander Terry Spiro on the celebration of his 25th anniversary of Ordination to the
Priesthood |

Among those taking part in the Lancaster memorial re-union at Pearce base were: Father Sean Sorahan, a later full time RAAF chaplain who served in Vietnam; Fr Michael Gatt, present Pearce chaplain and who was in the RAF in Malta before studying for the priesthood; and Father John Chokolich who served as an air chaplain in the Middle East and Malta towards the end of the war.

A dream come true! Young Michael always had a very soft spot for the Air Force. He first enlisted in the R.A.F. on 16 May 1957 in Malta, Service Number: 796268. After two years working in the Armoury he thought of higher ideals, namely: the priesthood. Within a short time in the R.A.F. he earned the respect of his mates and his superiors. On his departure from the R.A.F. the following was cited on his Certificate of Service by his Commanding Officer: “This airman is being discharged to join the priesthood. He has a
strong sense of duty and is very honest and determined. He has a strong
character, which is tolerant towards others. His ideals are beyond
reproach and he should be able to apply himself successfully in the
vocation which he has himself chosen.” On his arrival in W.A. in 1971 the Air Force connection flashed back to Fr. Michael when he met for the first time the then RAAF Chaplain, Fr. Sean Sorahan in uniform. Eventually Fr. Michael rejoined the Air Force as Chaplain for RAAF Pearce in July 1984, Service Number: 0325063.
